The steel band and its journey
The steel band spread first through the caribbean islands where there are now a large number of steel bands, and then it spread around the world. In recognition of this global steel band musical phenomenon, the first World Steel Band Music Festival was organised in Trindad in 2000
Steel band music is today used all over the worl in education to better cultural understanding and appreciation of music. It is also used as music therapy to benefit to beneifit both adults and Children.
The sound of the steel band has come to be recognised as the sound Trinidad and the Caribbean. It is born of creativity, invention and musical genius of unemployed urban youth from deprived communities. It is testimony to the power of the steel band that the music has survived its small beginnings and has spread throughout the world.
