Stuart
began studying classical piano aged 7, and
progressed to jazz piano with Steve Reynolds, aged 15. He
has been encouraged and guided by John Moore - director of
music at Shrewsbury School, and Stuart Spiers, who runs the
Jazz Combo at the school, and he joined the Shrewsbury Big
Band. At 16 he was already part of a jazz band called the
Blue Monk Quartet, and he won an award from Shrewsbury and
District Arts Association, enabling him to study with Jason
Rebello. With all this, - an early natural inclination,
indicating the huge natural potential, a lot of musical
saturation and encouragement, it’s not surprising Stuart
quickly found himself in demand to perform jazz, -
sometimes with poetry through Border Arts, and for musicals
and classical performances.

a Flamenco-esque flourish from his guitar, as a tempting
little taster for his first song. Ben may not have a
convenient little tag, to which to hang on to his sound,
but what is clear is his gift at handling a guitar, and his
smooth natural vocal skill. If there were such a genre
as “flamenco-blues-folky” stuff, then Ben would be its lead
exponent, as all of these influences are injected into
every song, with an unaffected ease. All of which comes
with Ben’s own individual stamp. Ben’s easy-going, in-
between song banter with the audience is indicative of the
ease in which he delivers his performance. Among the strong
self-compositions, he threw in a stunning cover of
Lindisfarne’s “Lady Eleanor”, which enthralled me much more
