 | Our sound was initially inspired by Django Reinhardt’s and
Stephane Grappelli’s Swing Guitar sounds of the ‘30s
and ‘40s, and then evolved to include Boogie-Woogie, the
Blues and Afro-Latin numbers: all with swing-driven
improvisations, lots of interplay, and a wry sense of humour.
The set includes songs, dances, ballads and instrumentals
from the ‘30s through to the ‘60s, with a list of characters
including Minnie the Moocher, Jerry the Junker, Mrs Murphy,
the Peanut Vendor and Top Cat. Sometimes there’s a
food/drink/sustenance thread with eulogies to Dunkin’
Bagels, drinking tea and Ovaltine, or just plain drinking.
As well as a few of our own numbers, we perform swing
standards from Django, Duke Ellington, Glen Miller, Benny
Goodman, Louis Prima, Louis Jordan and Cab Calloway.

He has been encouraged and guided by John Moore - director of music at Shrewsbury School, and Stuart Spiers, who runs the Jazz Combo at the school, and he joined the Shrewsbury Big Band. At 16 he was already part of a jazz band called the Blue Monk Quartet, and he won an award from Shrewsbury and District Arts Association, enabling him to study with Jason Rebello.
